Bookmarklet can turn HTML5 videos on Youtube and Vimeo into slitscan-like images:

Slitscanner is a little piece of Javascript you can run as a bookmarklet to start, well, slitscanning videos online. This only works in the HTML5 video players so for Vimeo you will need to select “Switch to HTML5 Player” in the lower right on the video pages. For YouTube it’s a little trickier, you can opt into the HTML5 test here, but they will still use the Flash Player for videos with ads.

… Just hit the bookmarklet on any YouTube or Vimeo video page with an HTML5 player, and it will start drawing onto a canvas in the browser. You can modify the speed with the slider (the default value draws the entire video to the width of the browser). You can also download the code and modify it as you wish.

I became really interested in projection mapping both through my day job & through DJing/performance. Often combined with electronic music performance & DJing, artists like Amon Tobin are taking it to the next level. Instead of merely watching a DJ on-stage turn a bunch of knobs and maybe jump up on the table where their equipment sits, Tobin is creating a breathtaking experience which combines the technology of music and light in fascinating ways.

Brands have been using projection mapping for a bit to create really strong branded experiences at festivals and special events. Red Bull plays in this arena and there was no shortage of projection mapping for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

However, what really excites me is the way the art-form is progressing into new territories of form & sculpture. Artists use light to project 2D and 3D images onto sculptures of their own making or architectural forms, playing with perception and viewpoint. They create experiences that truly mesmerize & puzzle the mind of the audience. What is real? What is actually there versus what is being projected? My favorite artist of the moment, Jean-Michel Verbeeck, is a magician when it comes to this.

Can’t wait to see where this medium continues to grow.

Coca-Cola recently supported celebrations of their 125th anniversary with some nice 270-degree projection-mapped data visualisation.  You can see what I mean in the video above…jump to 1:13 to skip the build up.

This form of immersive projection mapping would be a great way to make an impact at congress (or any public event).  For example, attendees at healthcare congresses could be ‘submerged’ into the body and shown a path of a disease or a drug’s mode-of-action.  Certainly less boring than watching an animation looping on a plasma screen.
